We have finished our Reading Street units! What an accomplishment! We will be continuing our knowledge lessons with writing, social skills, social studies or science content for the rest of the year.

Chapter 11
Addition and Subtraction within 100
**Chapter 11 Test on Tuesday, May 24th**

Objectives
     - Add ones to a 2-digit number without regrouping
     - Add tens to a 2-digit number.

Science
This week students will learn about puffins and the specific behavior and characteristics they have in order to survive in their habitat. Once students have learned about puffins, they will compare the information they learned about cranes and puffins.

 
 
Social Studies
Second Steps
In Second Steps, students will begin a new unit, Problem Solving. This unit will take them through the STEPs to work through a problem with a peer. This week students will practice all 4 steps of the STEP process
Geography
This week students will review and wrap up the Geography unit.

Writing Workshop
Writing (Skills)
In Skills, students will continue to practice the process of writing (plan, draft, and edit). Students will continue to write their drafts of the retell of "The Two Dogs" story and begin to edit their draft.

Informative (Genre)
Students will continue to write their Wingmaster's informative writing piece using sentence starters appropriate for each part of informative writing. 
During literacy time, students will also be completing their own research with science readers and writing their own informative writing pieces independently.
                  
Parent Reminders
1.  Scholastic Book Fair- Our class' PREVIEW day is on Monday from 2-2:30PM. Our PURCHASE day is Thursday from 1:30-2PM.
 2.    Before school help is this Tuesday morning at 8AM.
 3. Please be sure your child returns their green school-to-home folder and their homework folder to school everyday.  Also, please check your child's school-to-home folder each day for important handouts. I will write about specific handouts that you should be looking for throughout the week in this section of the newsletter. Students should also have their red homework folders in their backpacks every day.
4.    Children should bring in a small healthy snack (separate from their lunch) to have in class at 9:50 a.m. Please make sure that it is nut-free and has no glass products.
5.  Homework Update- There are some changes to our homework schedule. 
     a.) There will be no spelling homework for the rest of the school year.
6. Library Books- Please have your child bring in their library books to return back to the West Parish library from now until June 6th.

Homework
Your child will bring home their red homework folder on Monday. Inside the folder is a reading log, math activity (with materials), and individual login information for all of our online platforms. This week students should be reading for 10 minutes, practice play lines (if they have a part) and the American Symbols songs, practice addition AND subtraction math facts within 10, and read word chart, phrase chart, or reading passage twice.
Your child will bring home their penpal journal this week. Students will have penpal writing for homework for the next two weeks.
