  • Writers reread their writing to see if it makes sense and stays on topic.

                   Parent Reminders

1. Library day was today. Please make sure you help your
child remember to bring in their
book for next Monday.
2. Early Release for Thanksgiving break on Wednesday, November 23rd at 12 noon.
3. Math—Please continue to work on number formation at home. The students are writing many numbers backwards, which is confusing them when trying to solve their math problems. Thanks for your support!
4. Unit 2 Reading Street Card will be given out on Monday, November 27th to begin practicing Unit 2 words.
6. Book Fair is here! Our class will have a chance to preview the fair on Monday, November 27th at 1 p.m. and will shop for books on Thursday, December 1st. Catalogs will go home this week.
7. Over Thanksgiving break...please continue to have your child read daily.
8. Trick Word Test…due to the craziness of this week, we will have our trick word reading and spelling test the week of November 27th. Please have your child practice spelling and reading the trick words on the study guide I sent home today.
9. It’s just about hat and glove season…please label everything, if possible. Sometimes the children have a hard time identifying their
own clothes.

10. Unit 1 Reading Street Celebration…Overall the

students did a really good job on this test
last week. They all worked really hard and
gave their best effort. It’s amazing how
much they’ve grown already since the first
day of school! As I tell them in class before
every celebration, there are two reasons we take
these assessments. First it’s to give them a
chance to “show off” everything they’ve
learned so far and feel proud of themselves.
The second reason is so that I can learn
what they don’t know and still need to
practice.
11. Homework Schedule- At the bottom of the blog, I have changed the format of the homework schedule. Instead of the days of the week by each homework assignment, I have simply listed out all of the homework that is to be turned in at the end of the week under "This week's homework". All of the homework will be given on Monday unless listed otherwise. For example, Dialogue Journals [due on Friday] - Passed out on Wednesday. I do not expect all of the homework to be done on Monday, but I do expect it all to be turned in on Friday or the last day of that week unless you have contacted me otherwise. Please feel free to schedule the homework assignments that best fits your weekly schedule. Thank you for your support!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Process Writing~ Narrative
Students have brainstormed and chosen characters, settings, and continue to work on the problem and solution of their narrative stories. This week students will continue to work on their problem and solutions and discuss the sequence of events in a story.

This week’s mini-lessons will include…
  • Use uppercase at the beginning & punctuation at the end
  • Sequence of events ('First', 'Next', 'Then', 'Last')
  • Use spacing between words
  • Writers reread their writing and ideas to see if it makes sense and stays on topic.

                   Parent Reminders

1. Library day was today. Please make sure you help your
child remember to bring in their
book for next Monday.
2. Homework Math Games- This week I will send home the new math game on Tuesday. It has come to my attention that there is some confusion with what needs to be completed and what needs to be turned in. The roll out of homework math games is a two week process. The first week of the cycle you will receive the math "game board". In this first week, you will be reading the instructions of the game and playing the game with your child working on the foundational math skills and concepts the game targets. None of these materials need to be turned back in. They are for your child to keep to continue practicing and solidifying their math skills.  In the second week, your child will come home with a recording sheet for the game you learned how to play the week before. This recording sheet needs to be turned in by the end of the second week. The recording sheet allows me to see how the game is going and your child's understanding of the concepts and skills targeted. I hope this explanation helps and clears up any confusion. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your support!
3. Number & Letter FormationPlease continue to work on letter and number formation at home. The students are forming many letters and numbers incorrectly. Thank you for your support!
4. Holiday Scholastic Catalog- I have sent home the December Holiday Scholastic catalog today. Please send in or complete all orders by Friday, December 8th
5. Trick Word Test…we will have a trick word reading and spelling test next week. I will send home a study guide for you to practice with your child.
6. It’s just about hat and glove season…please label everything, if possible. Sometimes the children have a hard time identifying their
own clothes.
7. Reading Phonics & Sight Word Lists (Unit 1)- Please practice Week 5 & 6 (last two columns only) of your child's Reading Street word lists. I will be collecting the Reading Street Unit 1 sheets on Friday, November 17th to check-in with students for both weeks. Thank you!

I hope you had a nice Veterans' Day!

Six Traits of WritingIdeas
This week we will continue the steps to writing our very first story. Each student has picked a topic and finished their Five Finger Planners. Students will be focusing on putting their five most important ideas into complete sentences. Once they have written their five sentences, they will focus on putting the sentences into a story format. Our focus when writing complete sentences is that our sentences make sense, have an uppercase at the beginning and punctuation at the end, and have spacing between words.

Framing Your Thoughts ~ Predicate Expander of Where
This week students will be reviewing the role the connector ('and') plays in a sentence and learning about the predicate expander of where. Students will practice using these parts in a sentence during literacy centers and convention writing time.

This week’s mini-lessons will include…
  • Use uppercase at the beginning & punctuation at the end
  • Use spacing between words
  • How to write an introduction and closing
