Literacy

KNOWLEDGE

We have finished our Reading Street units! What an accomplishment! We will be continuing our knowledge lessons with writing, social skills, social studies or science content for the rest of the year.

SKILLS 

     This week each student will be assessed on his/her phonics skills with various measurements.

Math in Focus

Chapter 9

Weight and Length

**Chapter 9 Test on Thursday, June 2nd**

Objectives

     - Compare two lengths using the terms "tall", "taller", "long", "longer", "short", and "shorter"

     - Compare two lengths indirectly by comparing each with a third length

    - Compare more than two lengths using the terms "tallest", "longest", and "shortest"

    - Use a common starting point when comparing lengths.

    - Measure length using non-standard units.

    - Understand that using different non-standard units may give different measurements for the same object.

    - Use the term "unit" to describe length.

    - Compare two weights using the terms "heavy", "heavier", "light", "lighter" and "as heavy as".

    - Compare two weights indirectly by comparing each with a third weight.

    - Compare more than two weights using the terms "lightest" and "heaviest"

    - Measure weight using non-standard units.

n  - Compare weights using non-standard object as a unit of measure.

    - Use the term "unit" to describe weight.

    - Understand why there is a difference in measurement when different objects are used as 1 unit.

 

Science

This week students will learn about bald eagles and the specific behavior and characteristics they have in order to survive in their habitat. Once students have learned about bald eagles, they will compare the information they learned about other birds.

 

 

Social Studies

Second Steps

In Second Steps, students will begin a new unit, Problem Solving. This unit will take them through the STEPs to work through a problem with a peer. This week students will practice all 4 steps of the STEP process

American Symbols

This week students will continue to deepen their knowledge about American Symbols through a mini unit.

Writing Workshop

Writing (Skills)

In Skills, students will continue to practice the process of writing (plan, draft, and edit). Students will continue to write their drafts of the retell of "The Two Dogs" story and begin to edit their draft.

Informative (Genre)

Students will continue to write their Wingmaster's informative writing piece using sentence starters appropriate for each part of informative writing. 

Students will also complete a writing piece about American Symbols.'

Letter to a Kindergartener

This week students will write a letter to a kindergartener at our school who is moving up to first grade next school year. Once our letters are complete, I will send copies of each letter to each of the Kindergarten teachers to share with their students.

                  

Parent Reminders

1.  Please return library books to school from now until June 6th.

 2.   No before school help.

 3. Please be sure your child returns their green school-to-home folder and their homework folder to school everyday.  Also, please check your child's school-to-home folder each day for important handouts. I will write about specific handouts that you should be looking for throughout the week in this section of the newsletter. Students should also have their red homework folders in their backpacks every day.

4.    Children should bring in a small healthy snack (separate from their lunch) to have in class at 9:50 a.m. Please make sure that it is nut-free and has no glass products.

5.  Homework Update- There are some changes to our homework schedule. 

     a.) There will be no spelling or RAN fluency words, phrases or passage reading homework for the rest of the school year.

6. K-2 Extreme Science is on Wednesday at 1:15PM.

7. Our class has salad harvesting on Thursday morning and salad tasting on Friday during lunch.

This week students should be reading for 10 minutes, practice play lines (if they have a part) and the American Symbols songs, and practice addition AND subtraction math facts within 10.

Your child will bring home their penpal journal this week. This will be our last penpal letter for the year.

This week students will learn about puffins and the specific behavior and characteristics they have in order to survive in their habitat. Once students have learned about puffins, they will compare the information they learned about cranes and puffins.

 2.    Before school help is this Tuesday morning at 8AM.

 3. Second Steps

In Second Steps, students will begin a new unit, Problem Solving. This unit will take them through the STEPs to work through a problem with a peer. This week students will practice all 4 steps of the STEP process

Geography

Last week students learned about where they live (the country, state, city/town, and address). This week students will begin to review everything they have learned in this unit.

Even though you are only recording 1 night of discussion questions, your child still needs to continue to discuss the stories they are reading and listening to all 4 days of homework using the questions given.

     b.) Phonics: Spelling- Your child will bring home a list of spelling words. Please choose 2 nights to practice spelling the words given.

     c.) Automaticity: Words/Phrase/Passage- Automaticity means when something can be performed involuntarily and is an automatic response pattern or habit. Your child may have a word chart, phrase chart, or reading passage. Please the chart or passage twice per day. (This exercise counts towards your child's 10 minutes of reading per day.)

 d.) Math Homework- Please have your child practice the SUBTRACTION math facts.

 e.) Animal Project- If students have not turned in their animal projects, please turn it in ASAP. Students will be presenting their projects Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week.

6. Stone Zoo Field Trip Important Reminders- Everyone has turned in their field trip form! We cannot wait to go to the zoo. Before we go, there a couple important things I need to remind you of: all students need to be wearing appropriate walking shoes, a green t-shirt, a lunch in a brown paper (all chaperones will be carrying the lunches of the children in their group), a full recyclable water bottle, and sunscreen already applied. Please message me if your child needs to order a school lunch (most likely a sunbutter and jelly or fluff).

Once students finish and turn in their project, students will share their information with the class and then become the "expert" of their animal in their field trip group.

6. Stone Zoo Field Trip Volunteers- We had an outpouring of volunteers to help with the zoo field trip. I will be getting in contact with all of the families who have reached out to me over the past couple weeks. Thank you for supporting our class!
