Science
Backyard Growers Enrichment
     Last week our Backyard Growers enrichment program began! This is a great opportunity for the children to learn science content through a local organization with hands-on activities. The first lesson was about the garden ecosystem. Students were able to brainstorm where their food came from, create name tags, and make a class food chain using string based off of the animals on their name tags. This week's lesson will be on composting and vermiculture. 
     
Social Studies
   We are starting our National Symbols Unit this week. We learned about our first American symbol,  Statue of Liberty. This week we will learn about American flag and and the White House.
Second Steps- This week we will learned about two boys who used the strategies of fair ways to play during indoor recess.

Writing Workshop
"When I Grow Up" Class Book
   Students did a great job coming up with careers they could have when they grow up! We had ideas from being teachers to being computer programmers to professional sports players. This week we will continue to work on the planning stages of our “When We Grow Up” pieces. The students will finish their three reasons about the careers they chose. The next step in the planning process is to come up with four reasons why they want to have that profession with they grow up.




     
                   Parent Reminders

1. Our library time is Mondays at 1 p.m. Please have books brought back to school by the Friday before or Monday morning.
2. Reading passages are due on Thursday. Reading Street Word Lists are due on Friday. 
3. Scholastic book order- A spring catalog will go home this week. Please return orders and money by Monday, April 2nd.
4. "Reading is thinking!" The most important part of your child's reading blog is the discussion they have with you about the books. Please mark down which questions you discuss. Thanks!
5. Dialogue Journals-Dialogue Journals will be sent home on Tuesday this week due to my absence on Wednesday. Student may turn in their journals any day leading up to Friday once they have finished their letter for the week. Thank you!
6. Report cards were sent home on Friday, March 23rd. Please sign the envelope and return it as soon as possible. Thank you!
7. Class Pictures- If you still want to order class pictures, please send in the money slip as soon as possible.

Writing Workshop
Six Traits of Writing: Organization
     This week students will listen to a story all about emotions and how those emotions are described with specific words, phrases and illustrated with specific colors. After reading the story, I will have students choose an emotion we discuss and brainstorm. I will give students 3 minutes to finger paint a picture that they felt showed the emotion they chose. This week, students will be continuing to think of specific words to go with different emotions. 

Genre Writing: When I Grow Up
     This week students will begin to eliminate and focus on 2 careers that they want to have when they grow up. They will brainstorm 3 reasons for each career. Once they choose 2 careers with 3 reasons each, they will choose one career to write their final paper on. The students will edit their reasons and organize the reasons into a graphic organizer with an introduction and conclusion. 

This week's mini-lesson will include...
- What is voice? 
- How does word choice help with voice?

     This week students will be learning about how sound travels over a distance through vibration waves. They will be using string phones to experiment whether then can hear a friend speak quietly through the phone. 
Decomposition of Pumpkin
This week students will also be making another prediction and observation notes about our class pumpkin. 
     
Social Studies
   We will use our Social Studies time for Science this lessons this week. 
Second Steps- We will begin our last unit on Problem Solving. This week we will be focusing on a lesson all about naming the problem.

Pen Pal Letters
     This week students will continue to respond to their pen pal's letter using our letter format (greeting, body, closing, & signature). Students will be asking their pen pals questions to gather information about him/her. The students will be 'mailing' their letters back to their pen pals this week.

- How to respond to a letter
- Grammar (punctuation, uppercase)
- Questions to ask a pen pal to gather more information about the person

6. Fry 200 Words- I will be sending home a list of sight words your child should know by the end of first grade.
7. On Dr. Seuss' birthday, we had some special readers... Ms. Imel and Mr. Grant read to our class! Students were able to ask questions and tell them about their favorite part of our new school. 
8.**Dr. Seuss Comprehension Homework**- Before assigning this homework activity, I wanted the children to be exposed to The Cat in the Hat story multiple times before completing the assignment.
