Science
Backyard Growers Enrichment
Last week students learned about the benefits and positives of farm to table foods as well as setting up a bean experiment. Students took beans, a damp paper towel, and a clear Ziploc bag to set up their experiment. The students' 'bean observers' are hanging in our classroom windows for students to observe the changes (if any) that happen over a period of time. This week students will learn the five things plants need in order to grow.

Social Studies

Second Steps- The week before vacation we learned how to handle name calling using our calming down strategy. This week we will be going over our problem solving strategies.

This week students will continue to work on their how-to books that we had to put on hold for a couple of weeks. Most students are completing their rough drafts and conferencing with me on their sentences. Each student's writing continues to improve as the weeks go on. Keep up the great work first graders!
Also our class received letters back from our pen pals this week! We will be reading and responding to our pen pals to try and get to know them better. We cannot wait!

1. Our library time is Mondays at 1 p.m. Please have books brought back to school by the Friday before or Monday morning.
2. Reading passages are due on Thursday. Reading Street Word Lists are due on Friday.
3. "Reading is thinking!" The most important part of your child's reading blog is the discussion they have with you about the books. Please mark down which questions you  discuss. Thanks!
4. Each student needs to bring in a snack everyday to school. If this is not possible for you, please let me know and we can work something out.Thank you!
5. "Poem in Your Pocket Day" is Friday, April 27th. It is also favorite book character day so dress up like your favorite book character. Students will be choosing a poem to keep in their special  pocket that we'll be making in class. They'll get to share it with anyone who asks them. It should be a really fun literacy day!
6. Anyone ready to be checked in for Math Facts? Just send in a note and I'll check in with your child. Thanks!
