Patterns in the Sky
Last week students learned that the Earth rotates on an axis. They also learned that when we face the Sun, it is day time, and when we are facing away from the Sun, it is night time.  This week students will begin to learn about the Moon.

Writing Workshop
Framing Your Thoughts
Image result for writing clipart    This week students will begin creating their own fall-themed 'barebone sentence'. There will be whole group session to brainstorm fall-themed subjects (noun) and predicates (verb) a rough draft, and final draft of the sentence including an illustration. Our class will publish our fall barebone sentences. We will also be learning about adjectives.

Six Traits of WritingIdeas
     Magic Camera
This the students will go over the five senses (sight, scent, sound, taste, and touch). We will discuss words associated with the different senses and experiences students have had where they observed with their eyes, ears, nose, mouth or skin. This week we will be taking a sensory walk through and around the school to practice using our senses with our magic sense cameras. Each student will have a chance to discuss what they observe and reflect on what they saw on our walk. During this week's walks, we will be focusing on sight, sound, and smell.

Timed Fluency Write #2

This week the class will complete their second fluency prompt. Each fluency prompt will be 5 minutes long. One minute for students to brainstorm ideas about the prompt's sentence starter and 4 minutes to write their ideas. The goals for each fluency prompt are to see growth in the number of words students write and to see students applying grammar and writing skills they are learning throughout the year.
                  Parent Reminders
Image result for reminder clipart   1.  Our class goes to the library on Fridays at 12:15 p.m.
   2. Scholastic book order- The October catalog orders are due this Friday, October 18th.
  3. Wish List- Thank you for your snack donations!
  4. CORI Checks- If you need to have a CORI done, the paperwork needs to be done through the main office at the Blackburn Drive office. Thank you for your support of our class!
  5. Unit 1 Reading Card- I recorded how many of the phonics and high-frequency words your child read correctly. I also starred the words each child did not read correctly or read fluently (within 3 seconds). This week each child will practice the second column of words. Please note I am looking for the students to be able to read these words with automaticity (within 3 seconds). (Reminder: please return these on Fridays.)
6. On the back of your child's Daily Reading Log, you'll find a numbered list of discussion questions. Please jot down which questions you discussed with the books each night in the 'title' box.
7. Dialogue Journals—I will be sending home the journals tomorrow for students to write their 3rd letter. A couple reminders are that students should be sound spelling words that they do not know how to spell, skipping lines for corrections and comments to be made, and writing each letter in pencil. Use the sample letter on the last page of your child's journal as a guide.
8. The Topsfield Fair field trip was a success! The children had a blast walking around the educational barns learning about animals, insects, and plants. There were even opportunities for children to hold chicks, pet rabbits, and find the queen bee in an active hive! Thank you to our volunteers for joining us. We could not have done it without you!
9. Halloween Parade- Our Halloween Parade is on Thursday, October 31st beginning at 2:25 p.m. Please be at the school by 2:15 p.m. to watch the parade. We are in need of 3 parent volunteers to come into our room (Room 116) at 2:00 p.m. to help students get into their costumes before the parade. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know as soon as possible. Thank you!

I hope you all have had a fantastic weekend!
